Among the methods used by the Mayans of Copan to honor their kings and gods, to record significant events and even to disseminate, among the entire population, information that would give cohesion to society, sculpture was one of the most important means, as it could be placed in public places and even be the object of ceremonies.
The sculptural repertoire of the Mayans of Copan is remarkably wide and includes from small statues to enormous monoliths, exempt sculptures, such as altars or steles, and others that formed part of the decoration of squares (Plaza del Sol) buildings, such as lintels, mosaics and crests.
