The dominios arrived in 1537. The order of the Franciscans arrived in Honduras between 1574 and 1582, it was the Hispanic clergy on whom fell mainly the educational and evangelizing work of the native. In Honduras the custody of Santa Catarina Martir was constituted, dependent on the Franciscan province of the Holy Name of Jesus, with its center in Guatemala. In 1574 Friar Bernardino Perez founded the first Franciscan convents in Honduras: San Antonio in Comayagua and San Jeronimo in Agalteca. In 1582 Friar Juan Bautista Ponce founded the convent of St. Andrew in Nacaome, in 1586 the Convent of San Francisco de Trujillo, in 1589 that of San Diego in Tegucigalpa and in 1593 that of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves in Amapala.

 

"On that coast the Adelantado came ashore, on the morning of Sunday, August 14, 1502, with the flags and captains, and many others of the army, to hear mass; and the following Wednesday, when the vessels went ashore to take possession of that country in the name of the Catholic Kings, our lords, more than one hundred Indians came to the beach loaded with bastimentos, waiting for ours; as soon as they arrived, they presented to the Adelantado what they were carrying, and then they left without saying a word".
