The most recent geographic names or place names are those corresponding to Honduras in the Republican era. In many cases an older toponym was replaced by another indigenous or some that recall a hero, a Spanish colonizer, and/or, an important event, examples are the departments of: Tegucigalpa by Francisco , La Victoria by Valle, Gracias for Lempira, what was initially and partially Yoro and the Mosquitia for Colon, this is also the case of the department of Cortes, initially territory belonging to Yoro and Santa Barbara; Some Municipalities: Similaton by Cabañas, from the municipality of Brus Laguna, create the municipality Juan Francisco Bulnes, from the municipality of Puerto Lempira they create the municipality Ramon Villeda Morales, among several examples.
The existence of such a large variety of place names reflects the pluri-cultural and linguistic identity of Honduras, as is the case of place names of Garifuna origin, islanders, Anglo-American. All of this mosaic of place names sometimes reveals the localism, regionalism and nationalism of the country. That is why it should be repeated that place names are an important element in the context of national identity.
And the same can be said of the various regions, or cultural areas that comprise it, as well as its large and small populations. And of course it is also true about all its geographical features with its flora and fauna
